A kind lady who gave charity every week to the poor, gave them one day to understand that each would receive two more shillings if they were five less. Each beggar put all his effort into convincing the others to stop attending the weekly appointment. However, the next time they were all four and four more, so each received one less shilling.

How much did each one receive?

The amount to be distributed per week was 120 shillings. This, divided by 20 gives 6 shillings per head. If there had been only 15 people they would have received 8 shillings each, but when 24 came only they touched 5 shillings.
