The problem of socks

The problem of socks

In the bedside drawer I have 28 black socks and 28 white socks. When the alarm rings, it is still dark and not to wake my brother who sleeps in the same room,
I avoid turning on the light.

How many socks do I have to take to make sure I have at least one pair of the same color?

Solution

Three socks. If the first two are of different colors, the third necessarily has to coincide with one of the other two.
