Live with full awareness
When you are aware, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them as good or bad. But instead of letting life pass by, mindfulness means live in the moment and wake up to experience.
Actually, this "mindfulness" is a very simple form of meditation, which to date was little known in the West. A typical meditation is to focus all our attention on the breath as it flows in and out of the body. But in this case, focusing on each breath we will observe our thoughts as they arise in our mind and, little by little, we will let go of fighting with them.
On numerous occasions you will have noticed that thoughts come and go of their own accord; what you are not master of your thoughts. You can see how they appear in your mind, seemingly out of nowhere, and then disappear, like a burst of the soap bubble. In mindfulness it is necessary to reach a deep understanding that thoughts and feelings (including negatives) are transient. They come and go, and ultimately, you have the possibility to choose whether you should act on them or not.
The attention is made on the observation without criticism; managing to become compassionate with ourselves. In essence, attention allows us to capture negative thinking patterns before they sink us into a negative spiral of worry. In this way the process of putting a new one in control in our lives begins.
Benefits of Mindfulness
Over time, mindfulness causes long-term changes in the mood of the person who practices it, and the levels of happiness and well-being increase markedly.
Scientific studies have shown that mindfulness not only prevents depression, but also positively affects the brain patterns that underlie day-to-day anxiety, stress and irritability so that when they occur, they dissolve more easily. Other studies have shown that regular meditators see their doctors less frequently and make less use of health services. It helps improve memory, increases creativity and reaction times become faster.
What is meditation?
Despite these proven benefits, however, many people still have some doubts when they hear the word "meditation." So before continuing, it might be useful for you to read the following points, to dispel some myths:
- Meditation is not a religion.. Mindfulness is simply a method of mental training. Many people who practice meditation have religious beliefs, but in reality, many atheists and agnostics are great meditators, one thing has nothing to do with the other.
- It is not necessary to sit cross-legged on the floor (like the images you've seen on numerous occasions), although you can do it if you wish. You can meditate sitting or lying down, but you can also practice having a full awareness of what you are doing at any time, anywhere.
- Mindfulness practice does not require much time, although some patience and persistence are required. Many people will soon discover that meditation frees them from the pressures of lack of time, so they have more to spend on other things.
- Meditation is not complicated.. Even when meditation seems difficult to us, you will have learned something valuable about the functioning of the mind, and therefore it will have benefited you psychologically.
- It won't "numb" your mind nor does it prevent you from making efforts to achieve your vital or professional goals. Meditation is not about accepting the unacceptable. It is about seeing the world more clearly, so that you can take wiser and more considerate measures, and thus be able to change the things that need to be changed. Meditation helps to cultivate a deep awareness that allows you to evaluate your goals and find the optimal route to the realization of your deepest values.
So you know, it's never too late to start having a full conscience by meditating and relaxing at the same time.
